15 Subway Secret Menu Items to Try

You’re probably familiar with Subway already, but did you know that Subway has a secret menu?

While most of us think about fast food as greasy burgers and tacos, Subway offers the revolutionary idea that you can order fast food every day and lose weight on a budget.

Subway is all about customization, providing a list of signature sandwiches that you can make your own with bread and fix-in choices.

There’s also a long list of amazing secret menu items to venture out of your everyday sandwich selection.

Subway’s Secret Menu

Read on to discover your new favorite hand-held from my list of Subway secret menu items.

The Pizza Sub

Pizza is probably the most beloved food on earth. It may not be the healthiest, but you can make a healthier version of it at Subway with the PizzaSub.

Subway has a meatball sandwich as a permanent fixture on the menu, so you know that they have fresh marinara sauce stocked.

Thus, the pizza sub comes on the bread of your choice topped with tomato sauce, a hearty helping of provolone and parmesan cheese, pepperoni, and any vegetable you want.

Request it toasted to melt the cheese with the tomato sauce for that unmistakable pizza flavor.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Sub

You won’t have to go to a fancy French bistro to order this elaborate dish.

Chicken Cordon Bleu is a famous Swiss dish that involves wrapping a thin slice of pork around Swiss cheese, then enveloping it in a chicken breast before breading and frying it.

The Chicken Cordon Bleu Sub deconstructs this decadent dish into a healthier version that tastes just as fancy.

To order it, ask for a sub with grilled chicken, thinly sliced ham, and Swiss cheese all toasted together.

I like to add spinach and honey mustard to complement the wonderful flavors of this classic dish-turned sandwich.

Deconstructed Breakfast Taco

I wouldn’t call this a deconstructed breakfast taco. Instead, I would call this a breakfast taco sandwich. Whatever you want to call it, it’s absolutely delicious and the best way to start your day.

To order the deconstructed Breakfast Taco, you order a flatbread sandwich with grilled steak, egg whites, guacamole, spinach, red onions, and sliced tomatoes, toasted and then topped with a drizzle of chipotle sauce.

You get an explosion of spicy tangy flavor to accompany a veggie and protein-filled taco that simply trades a flour tortilla for flatbread.

If you’re a vegetarian, you can omit the steak or trade it for mozzarella cheese. I also recommend adding pickled jalapenos for an extra kick.

Wing Effect

Do you love those extra bits of meat protruding from the edges of your sandwich?

Biting into them before devouring the whole sandwich or tearing them off to save for a carnivorous post-sandwich treat are some of the great joys in life.

Subway calls this meaty outcropping the “wing effect,” and you can ask for it.

By ordering your sandwich with the Wing Effect, your server will lay the meat at its full width onto the sub bread instead of folding it over.

Whether it’s bologna or turkey, you’ll get all the surplus meat your heart desires.

Eggs Florentine Flatbread

If you’re looking for a light and delicious start to your day, look no further than the Eggs Florentine Flatbread.

Despite the Italian reference in its name, Eggs Florentine is a French dish that involves adding spinach to poached, scrambled, or baked eggs before placing it over bread and smothering it with hollandaise sauce.

Subway uses soft fluffy flatbread and a healthy, Italian-inspired twist.

The Eggs Florentine Flatbread at Subway stuffs flatbread full of egg whites, spinach, olives, banana peppers, red onions, and black olives, substituting a heavy Hollandaise sauce with Italian dressing.

The Meat Lover

Subway may be one of the healthiest fast-food chains out there, but they’ll humor your decadent, heart-stopping whimsies, too.

The Meat Lover is a carnivorous smorgasbord of all the richest meats you can think of. You can consider this luxurious sandwich a cheat day indulgence.

The Meat Lover is packed with a whopping four helpings of steak, six strips of bacon, and a third layer of pepperoni. The rest is up to you.

I like to add Swiss cheese, a bunch of veggies, and Italian dressing to cover all the food groups.

Chicken Parmesan Sub

Chicken Parmesan is one of the most comforting Italian dishes, and while it’s normally breaded and fried for maximum comfort, Subway offers a lighter version without sacrificing its telltale flavors.

This delicious sub appeared as a special menu item back in 2010, and while it never made permanent status, you can still get it.

Your server will probably know how to make it just by its name, but if not, simply ask for a sub with roasted chicken, marinara sauce, and parmesan cheese, toasted so that the parmesan melts with the marinara and creates its own type of breading around the chicken.

The Feast Sub

If you thought the Meat Lover was a carnivorous feat, brace yourself for the ultimate meat lover’s paradise with the Feast Sub.

The Feast combines two of Subway’s signature sandwiches: the BMT and the Club. You get a staggering five meat sandwich piled so high that you’ll think you’re at a New York deli.

The Feast Sub comes with multiple slices of salami, pepperoni, ham, turkey, and roast beef with your choice of veggies, cheeses, and sauces.

It is the most expensive sandwich on the Subway secret menu, but with this much meat, you could probably skip the next couple of meals anyway.

Old Cut

The Old Cut is a convenient hand-held technique that harkens back to Subway’s early years when employees would cut the top off the sub bread in a V-shape and stuff the bread hotdog style with fix-ins.

You can ask for any sandwich served Old Cut.

It’s a foolproof way to ensure that your sandwich innards don’t fall out of the side with every bite.

The Old Cut is thus best for those of us that like to stuff our subs with as many veggies and sauces as possible.

Big Philly Cheesesteak

A Philly Cheesesteak is one of the Northeast’s most famous creations and a beloved sandwich nationwide.

Combining succulent steak with loads of yellow cheese melted together in a decadent mound, cheesesteaks are then shoveled into a hoagie roll with grilled peppers and onions.

Subway may not make authentic Philly cheesesteak, but you can immolate this delicious Philly favorite by ordering a sort of deconstructed version of it.

To order the Big Philly Cheesesteak, ask for a footlong sub with three helpings of steak and double the cheese.

I recommend a white cheese and the addition of green bell peppers and white onions. Throw it all in the toaster and you’ll get pretty darn close to a cheesesteak you might find at a Philly hoagie shop.

Sweet and Sour Chicken Sub

While you might think this is a Chinese dish, sweet and sour is a prized flavor combination in any culinary culture.

Subway assumes a more European take on sweet and sour chicken by combining sweet onions with red wine vinegar.

This delectable Sweet and Sour Chicken sub features grilled chicken bathed in sweet onion sauce and red wine vinaigrette.

It’s a sophisticated sandwich that will give your fast-food sandwich an elegant upgrade. I like to add Swiss cheese, spinach, and red onion to round out the flavors with an earthiness and salt.

Tuna Melt

A diner menu classic, the Tuna Melt has been an American favorite for decades. In fact, Subway’s tuna melt is a permanent fixture on the menu.

Subway uses wild-caught tuna, thinly sliced onions, and provolone cheese toasted to perfection for their rendition of a Tuna Melt.

They don’t skimp on the tuna, either. There’s a heartier proportion of tuna and cheese to bread than in your standard tuna melt.

Plus, the lean protein and cheese combo packs a lot of protein with a fraction of the fat of other lunch meats.

Chicken Pizzaiola Sub

This fan-favorite combines a pizza sub with a chicken parmesan sub for the ultimate Italian comfort food fest in one delicious hand-held.

The Chicken Pizzaiola will make a certified pizza chef out of your American sandwich maker.

The only thing that’s lacking is a wood-burning oven, but the toaster will have to do.

To order the Chicken Pizzaiola Sub, get an Asiago cheese bread sub stuffed with chicken breast, topped with pepperoni slices and mozzarella or provolone cheese, then drench it with marinara sauce and toast it.

I add parmesan cheese, olives, mushrooms, and onions because that’s my usual pizza order.

The Spicy Nacho Steak

If you can make a taco and a pizza into a sandwich, why not try your hand at nachos?

The Spicy Nacho Steak sub is the zestiest, most creative sandwich on my list, utilizing a combination of ingredients and sides.

If you’re a fan of putting chips inside your sandwich, you’ll love this inventive Subway secret menu item.

The Spicy Nacho Steak sub contains grilled steak, shredded Monterrey jack cheese, onions, and bell peppers dressed with Chipotle sauce and sprinkled with Doritos nacho cheese chips before heading to the toaster.

I recommend adding pickled jalapenos and guacamole for added authenticity.

The Footlong B.M.T

While the BMT may be a signature sandwich, the Footlong BMT is a whole other animal.

Come hungry and bring a few friends to share the chewing load with this meaty, cheesy behemoth.

The Footlong BMT is basically the “kitchen sink” of Subway sandwiches, piling every ingredient in the shop into one gargantuan sub.

It comes with eight double meat and cheeses of your choice, 9 strips of bacon, and every vegetable, plus extra bread to boot.

A foot doesn’t seem long enough for this sandwich stacked a mile-high.

Final Thoughts

Subway started as a modest made-to-order sandwich shop to help a high school graduate pay for college and ended up paying off for the entire globe’s handheld cravings.

Originating as a project to fund founder and 17-year-old Fred DeLuca’s dream of becoming a doctor, Subway became a far more ambitious project than the teen’s medical aspirations.

DeLuca and his older friend and investor Peter Buck opened the first Subway in Connecticut in 1965, which has since grown into the largest sandwich franchise in the world.

Perhaps DeLuca sacrificed his dreams of becoming a doctor, but at least he found a way to bring health and nutrition to millions of hungry patrons. Subway sandwiches always use a myriad of fresh veggies, healthful, scratch-made sauces, lean deli meats, and delicious bread baked in-house.

From the pizza sub to the wing effect, spicy nacho steak and the behemoth footlong B.M.T, there’s sure to be something on the Subway secret menu that is bound to satisfy any particular craving you may have. You can get made-to-order sandwiches exactly how you like them, no matter how wacky they sound.

My list of the best Subway secret menu items shows you how creative you can be with a sandwich and is sure to become a regular inspiration for your order rotation.
