Astoria Restaurants You Need to Check Out This Week
Usually, when someone mentions going out to eat in New York City, people tend to immediately think of the bustling restaurants full of tourists in Times Square or the Michelin-star restaurants in the Flatiron District. But, true NY foodies know that the best cuisine can often be found off the beaten path in smaller neighborhoods, especially Astoria.
Besides the Museum of the Moving Image and some great off-Broadway theaters, the most enjoyable part of my time in Astoria, NY came from visiting all of the exquisite, lesser-known restaurants scattered throughout this charming neighborhood.
In order to help other food-lovers like myself have the same wonderful experiences when they find themselves in this delightful part of Queens, I decided to compile this handy guide to finding the greatest restaurants around the area to eliminate the need for any stress or worry so you can get right to the good stuff!

First up is an absolute gem of a restaurant called Vesta Trattoria & Wine Bar that has to be one of the best places to eat in Astoria for authentic Italian cuisine, if you ask me.
Everything here is made from scratch and all of that effort is clearly evident in each bite of everything from their homemade pasta to their veal shank osso buco.
Look for Vesta Trattoria off of 21st Street and 30th Avenue, right across the street from the Van Alst Playground.
Butcher Bar

(@butcherbar)As someone who was born in the South, there are few things I love more than some good, old-fashioned BBQ, but one of the last places I expected to find that was here in Astoria, NY⸺until I went to Butcher Bar, that is.
Butcher Bar is a barbecue restaurant where all of their beef is grass-fed and the chicken is %100 organic, located off of 30th Avenue just a short walk away from the 30th Avenue subway station entrance.
When you get to Butcher Bar, I highly recommend trying some of their unbelievable double-smoked burnt ends.
Astoria Seafood and Grill

Now, onto the seafood-lover’s paradise: Astoria Seafood and fish market. This is the place to go for the freshest fish in all of NYC, I think, and you even have the option of buying wholesale if you operate a restaurant yourself.
When you head to Astoria Seafood, make sure to try whatever their whole fried red snapper that’s big enough to share, except you won’t want to!
Check out Astoria Seafood off of 37th Avenue and 33rd Street, just northwest of The Collective Paper Factory hotel.
Sugar Freak

Next up is a place called Sugar Freak that you can find right across the street from Butcher Bar on 30th Avenue, right down the road from Ocean Fish Market.
Sugar Freak is a Creole restaurant that serves up incredibly delicious Southern classics inside their own little slice of New Orleans right here in New York.
When you go here, I highly recommend visiting during their bottomless mimosa brunch special from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM on Fridays, and from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM on Saturdays and Sundays for some weekend fun.
Il Bambino

Il Bambino is a unique and interesting Italian restaurant in Astoria, NY that specializes in panini, tapas, and all the antipasti you could ever want to accompany your wine.
I cannot recommend anywhere else in the city that has a better panini than Il Bambino, and the sheer number of variations they offer is simply mind-blowing.
I highly recommend either their Italian meatloaf panini or the roasted chicken panini that comes with delicious maple bacon aioli.

Another phenomenal dining destination in Astoria that you’re not going to want to miss out on is a place called Bahari Estiatorio that specializes in Greek cuisine, boasting a menu of “Hellenic standards”.
Bahari Estiatorio offers a medley of grilled fish, grilled meats, and even traditional oven-baked casserole dishes called margeirefta that are totally to-die-for.

Now, it’s time to introduce The Pomeroy, a New American restaurant located off of Ditmars Boulevard that serves artisan cuisine in a hip, comfy setting.
When you head down to The Pomeroy, be sure to try their short rib tacos or their honey chipotle chicken wings because they both go great alongside one of their countless craft beer options.

Up next we’re going to want to head to Mar’s for some raw oysters and drinks in this vintage-style restaurant located off of 35th Street and 34th Avenue, right across from CTown Supermarkets and just a couple blocks from the Museum of the Moving Image.
They serve both brunch and dinner here at this amazing Astoria restaurant, and I wholly recommend trying both!
Off The Hook Raw Bar

Off The Hook Raw Bar is a hidden gem of a restaurant that’s tucked away off of 34th Street, so it can be a bit easy to miss sometimes, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled because you don’t want to pass on this place.
This is one of the best places to eat in Astoria, NY if you’re in the mood for a massive Maine lobster weighing in at around 1.25 pounds, but they also have plenty of other fresh seafood that you’re going to seriously love.
Ovelia

Ovelia is a modern Greek restaurant that you can find off of 34th Street and 40th Avenue, right down the road from the United Brothers Fruit Markets and the Key Food Supermarket.
When you visit Ovelia, my top recommended dish for you to order is either their whole branzino or their Greek coffee-rubbed brisket.

Steak is my all-time favorite food in the world, so when I stopped by Meet the Meat on a whim, I was absolutely blown away by the quality of their food and service.
My favorite dish that I ordered from Meet the Meat during my time in Astoria was their bone-in, prime sirloin steak, but they also have an enormous porterhouse steak meant for 3 people that you should definitely try if you’re with some friends or family.

Sanfords Astoria is a New American restaurant that puts their own unique spin on classic American comfort food, and they do it oh-so-well if you ask me.
They have both a brunch menu with a fun option to make it boozy with mimosas, and they also offer a dinner menu that features an oyster happy hour every day starting at 4:00 PM!
One of my highest recommended dishes from Sanfords Astoria would have to be their gouda-stuffed duck burger; I’d simply never had a burger so delectable in my life until I came to NYC and found this place.

Taverna Kyclades is one of the most popular restaurants in Astoria, NY for plenty of reasons, but what makes it one of my favorite restaurants to go to when I’m in the area is the fact that they have more Greek seafood dishes to choose from than anywhere else I’ve ever been.
Look for Taverna Kyclades off of Ditmars Boulevard on the ground floor of The Acropolis, and when you find it, be sure to get an order of the grilled swordfish⸺you won’t regret it!

Next up, head to The Highwater, a bar & grill located off of Broadway and 35th Street where you’ll find some of the best food in Astoria, in my opinion.
They have everything from tacos and salads to burgers and brunch, so no matter what you’re looking for, The Highwater has an eclectic menu that will be sure to have something you love.
I strongly recommend their “Volcano Platter” which is a selection of 4 delicious appetizers that come served together on a flaming platter so you really get a nice mix of flavors.
Pye Boat Noodle

Pye Boat Noodle is an authentic Thai restaurant located off of Broadway Avenue in Astoria that I think you’re going to love just as much as I do.
I think this is the best place to get Pad Thai in the area, but they also have other Thai delicacies like pad see ew and tom yum.
Pye Boat Noodle is also a great place to come for craft cocktails and lots of premium liquors like vodka, whiskey, bourbon, cognac, and much more.
Vite Vinosteria

This next amazing Astoria restaurant on my list is called Vite Vinosteria and it’s where you’ll find some of the best Italian food in NYC which I know is a bold claim, but their homestyle Italian cooking really blew my mind when I had the pleasure of dining there.
You can come here for both brunch and dinner, but I think Vite Vinosteria really shines best during their dinner service.
My favorite pasta that I tried here at Vite Vinosteria was their gnocchi, but they have exquisite meat and seafood dishes as well for those that crave a bit more protein.
Salvatoria Kitchen & Bar

I had never before eaten at a Salvadoran restaurant prior to visiting Salvatoria Kitchen & Bar, but now that I’ve tried their magnificent cuisine, I will always be on the lookout for places like it.
I recommend either their carne asada for the surf and turf, both come with their amazing sauteed skirt steak, but probably my favorite menu items of theirs are the different picadas they offer
Milkflower

Milkflower is over off of 31st Avenue where you can get a classic slice of New York pizza without having to venture into the crowded city.
It’s hard to beat delicious wood-fired pizza, but they also have mouth-watering small plates like wood-roasted octopus and some insanely tasty roasted meatballs.
My most recommend pizza from here has to be the one they call the “Queen” which comes with tomato, mozzarella, basil, and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Just a few blocks west of the Astoria Heights Playground off of 31st Avenue is a place called DiWine, a delightful gastropub that features creative, infused cocktails as well as cheese and meat charcuterie boards.
They serve dinner here every day starting at 5:00 PM and going all the way until 1:00 AM, making DiWine one of my favorite late-night haunts for food and drinks with happy hour specials every day.
Zenon Taverna

Lastly, no visit to Astoria is complete without a stop by Zenon Taverna, an unbelievably resplendent Greek restaurant that you can find off of 31st Avenue.
What I love most about Zenon Taverna is that everything is made in-house from authentic, traditional Greek and Cypriot recipes that are not commonly found in most restaurants.
I strongly recommend you try their appetizer of grilled quails before diving into one of their succulent meat platters like the souvlaki pork kebabs.
Final Thoughts
As you can see, Astoria is no slouch when it comes to great places to eat, and it just goes to show that you don’t always need to brave the crowded streets of Manhattan in order to find restaurants in NYC with top-quality cuisine.
